Slow little rituals with big flavours

Have you ever roasted nuts at home? It is possibly the most delicious way to eat plain nuts. By roasting them slowly, the flavours come out and it just is incomparable with any store-bought roasted version.

An added bonus is that dry-roasted (or soaked) nuts are easier to digest.

So an easy and tasty gift for someone is a jar of home-roasted nuts. I added cumin seeds to this version but it is optional and you can experiment with adding other flavorings. The important thing is to use a heavy bottomed pan (e.g. cast iron pan) so the nuts will not burn so easily.

Makes a big batch;

  • 1 cup of almonds
  • 1 cup of cashew nuts
  • 1 cup of walnuts
  • 1 Tbsp of cumin seeds (optional)

Place the almonds and cashews in the heavy bottomed pan and put on low heat. Cover the pan with a lid and let the nut mix warm up for about five minutes. After five minutes stir the nuts in the pan and add the walnuts and cumin seeds. Roast the nut mix for an additional 5-10 minutes. The nuts will be ready when all fragrant and browned. Let the nut mix cool down completely before putting them in a jar.
