A green start of the day
- ¾ cup of rolled oats
- 2 Tbsp flaxseed
- 4 dates
- 1 cup of water
- 1 Tbsp of chlorella powder (optional but makes the colour even better)
- 1 Tbsp of orange blossom water
- 1 cup of frozen green peas
- 2 bananas, chopped
What is your favourite colour? My friend Martine loves green. We have been friends our whole lives and for me the colour green always makes me think of her.
Now that it is so warm outside I like to make breakfasts that cool me down. Smoothie bowls are a good start of the day because they are nutritious and taste a bit like eating ice-cream. One of the health benefits of green peas is blood sugar control- a useful characteristic particularly in the morning. I used to ‘mask’ them by adding raw cacao powder, but for this recipe I wanted to accentuate their green color. No more hiding!
Start the night before by freezing the bananas, and soaking the oats, flaxseed and dates in the water overnight.
The next morning put all the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. I recommend blending in stages and making sure the consistency is smooth before adding the next ingredients. Start with the soaked rolled oats, flaxseed, chlorella, dates and vanilla powder. As a second stage add the frozen peas and blend until they are fully incorporated into the smoothie. Finally add the frozen bananas and blend until smooth again.
Serve in a bowl and decorate to your liking. Green makes a lovely canvas. I usually eat it with a hot or cold matcha continuing the green theme.
